A police community support officer was left needing treatment in hospital after being attacked by a knife-wielding man.

West Yorkshire Police said the male officer suffered a hand injury in the assault, which happened as he challenged a man suspected of shoplifting in Farmfoods on Waterloo Terrace in Leeds at about 17:25 BST on Tuesday.

The suspect fled the scene, but a man was later arrested in the garden of a property in Bramley in the early hours of Wednesday, a force spokesperson said.

The 31-year-old man was being held on suspicion of section 18 assault and possession of a bladed article, they added.

Ch Supt Steve Dodds, from West Yorkshire Police, said: "Any incident in which a knife is used clearly has the potential to have very serious consequences.

"Fortunately, in this case the officer was not seriously injured and was discharged following hospital treatment."

Officers have appealed for witnesses, or anyone with relevant footage, to get in touch.
