A man is in a serious condition in hospital after being stabbed while trying to help the victim of an attempted robbery, police have said.
Officers were called to Marmion Road in Thorneywood, Nottinghamshire, after reports a teenager on an e-scooter was being chased by a group of youths at about 18:25 GMT on Sunday.
Police say the man - who is known to the teenager - suffered a serious stab wound to his stomach a short time after intervening in nearby Beecham Avenue.
The force is appealing for CCTV, doorbell, mobile phone or dashcam footage, as well as urging any witnesses to get in touch.
Detectives have been analysing CCTV footage and are making house-to-house inquiries in the area, police added.
Extra patrols have also been deployed near to the scene to provide reassurance while investigations continue.
Det Insp Paul Shortt, of the force, said: "We are treating this incident with the utmost seriousness as it has left a man in hospital with serious injuries.
"Officers are following a number of lines of inquiry and members of the public can expect to see a police presence in the area during the rest of the day.
"We believe there were a number of witnesses to the incident and we want to take their accounts of what happened."
