Four cows who managed to break out from their enclosure had to be rescued from quicksand.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said it had received reports of the animals being stuck up to their necks near Newton Arlosh at 10:00 BST on Monday.

It said the cows had broken through a gate overnight and entered a river.

The team from Carlisle East station said they worked with local farmers to pull the cows from the mud and return them to dry land.

They added they had worked alongside Carlisle West and Wigton fire stations.

"An udderly good ending for all," the fire service said.
