Flying Scotsman to appear at city rail gala

Flying Scotsman was the first locomotive to reach 100mph

The world-famous Flying Scotsman will appear at a railway festival in Derby.

The 1923-built locomotive is to join other historic engines at The Greatest Gathering in August.

The event has been organised by city-based train manufacturer Alstom as part of Railway 200, a year-long celebration of the creation of the railways.

"Flying Scotsman's attendance is a powerful tribute to Britain's steam legacy and a moment of railway history not to be missed," said Alstom managing director Rob Whyte.

Flying Scotsman was the first locomotive to circumnavigate the globe and is now part of the York-based National Railway Museum's collection.

In 1934, it was the first locomotive to reach 100mph (160km/h).
