Police have launched an investigation after a suspected firearm was discovered in a garden in Nottingham.

Nottinghamshire Police said the suspected handgun was found by a gardener at a property in Welstead Avenue, Aspley, at about 13:45 BST on Wednesday.

The force said it was buried underneath a bush and early indications suggested it had been discarded "some time ago".

Det Sgt Hannah Frame said an investigation was under way and asked anyone with information to come forward.

"The suspected firearm has been recovered by officers and forensic and other investigations will now take place," she said.

"We'd like to thank the person who found it for making us aware of their discovery."
