A road had to be shut after a gas leak was detected

A road closure will likely continue into the weekend, due to a gas leak.

George Street in Nailsworth, Stroud, has been shut and traffic is being diverted since Monday, after a gas main was damaged and a leak was detected.

Gloucestershire County Council said that during some planned resurfacing road works, a gas pipe was struck by machinery which led to the leak.

Engineers were sent out to investigate and stop the leak overnight, however, about 30 metres of the pipe now has to be repaired. A spokesperson for the council has confirmed that George Street will remain closed during the repairs.

There were no casualties or evacuations, during this time, Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed.

The council spokesperson said: "While we were aware of the presence of the gas pipe, it was laid at an unusually shallow depth which contributed to the incident."

Andrew Wilding, Wales & West Utilities operations manager for Stroud, added: "In order to keep the local community, road users and our colleagues safe, we will keep the council's road closure along George Street in place while we work.

"This is a complex job, and the nature of the damage has meant we will need to bring in additional teams to support our work."
