A main road in Somerset has been partially closed due to a sinkhole.

Station Road in Castle Cary was closed to all vehicles on Sunday between Victoria Gardens and Almshouse Close.

In a post on Facebook, Travel Somerset said: "The road is now open following a safety inspection. It was initially closed yesterday following concerns relayed by the public.

"The road was reopened under temporary traffic lights following an assessment by the team. Please note the footpath remains closed."

Castle Cary councillor Henry Hobhouse told BBC Radio Somerset: "I had an email message at 20:20 BST on Saturday night telling me that a hole had appeared in the road.

"I went straight out, and later that evening the highways team arrived, and we found the hole was about 5ft (1.5m) deep.

"They closed the footpath which had no support underneath it, but left half the road open, though part of the road had already been closed for over a year as it has been sinking.

"There is a gas pipe hanging with no support across the washed out area underneath the road.

"We've been waiting for the new budget to come in, I believe it will cost around £100,000 to fix and that has been put aside to fix it in the summer period."
