Plans have been submitted for up to 135 new homes on a former gasworks site in Kent.

The application for the former Ship Street site in Folkestone also includes proposals for non-residential floorspace, a new pocket park, and car and cycle parking.

Folkestone and Hythe District Council bought the site in 2021.

Connor McConville, the council's cabinet member for assets and local government reorganisation, said: "This site will deliver an exciting new residential development."

He also said the plans would provide "much-needed homes and offer pleasant walking and cycling links".

Consultation events were held in 2022 and 2023 and most of those who responded agreed building homes on the land would improve the look and security of the area, the council said.

Central government previously approved a bid for £2.5m funding from its Brownfield Land Release Fund, which was earmarked for the remediation of the site to prepare it for housing.

The scheme, designed by Fletcher Priest Architects and Arup, will be decided on by 8 December.
