Five more people have been arrested and one charged after a night of "horrific violence" during which shots were fired and a car driven into a house, police said.

The attacks happened around Richmond Court in Grangetown, near Middlesbrough, on Thursday where another vehicle was set alight.

Cleveland Police said one person was injured in the night of "targeted and linked" attacks, while a police pursuit on nearby Fabian Road on Friday was also linked to the violence.

John McElvaney, 32, of Richmond Court, has been charged with offences including dangerous driving, possession of a knife and possession of a Class A drug. He was due to appear at Teesside Magistrates' Court on Monday.

Police said the five people picked up in the latest arrests remain in custody for questioning.

A man and a woman, both 23, were arrested on Monday.

The man has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm, arson, possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and criminal damage.

The woman has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and money laundering.

That followed a 30-year-old man being arrested at an address in Eston on suspicion of grievous bodily harm, arson, criminal damage and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

A man in his 30s and a woman in her 40s were also arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Richmond Court in Grangetown is a small cul-de-sac consisting of a cluster of red-brick houses. Police tape has been hung across the road to prevent access. A police car is parked outside a house which has a broken window.

In total nine people have been arrested in connection with the violence.

A 27-year-old man and a 46-year-old woman have since been released on conditional bail pending investigation.

Another 27-year-old man is still being questioned, a police spokesperson said.

Redcar and Cleveland Labour MP Anna Turley said the local community deserved to "feel safe in their streets".

Turley has written to the home secretary to ask for additional support to be given to Cleveland Police to locate the "causes of the lawlessness".
