Gardaí (Irish police) have seized more than €8m (£7m) worth of drugs in a major operation targeting a "well-structured" criminal organisation in the Republic of Ireland.

Searches were carried out in 16 properties across counties Dublin, Meath, Westmeath, Laois and Offaly on Tuesday and Wednesday.

About 110kg of suspected cocaine and 1.5kg of suspected heroin - with a combined street value of €8.2m - was recovered from two vans and has been sent for further examination.

A man in his 40s was subsequently charged with drug trafficking offences.

The operation - which involved about 60 garda personnel - also confiscated cash, totalling about £38,000 (€43,700) and €63,000 (£54,600).

Gardaí have said investigations are ongoing.
