A West Sussex school has been forced to close because of a burst water main.

Imberhorne Lower School, in East Grinstead, told parents on Friday morning it "had to close the site at very short notice".

Headteacher Lee Walker said in a statement: "Due to a burst water main we have no water at the Windmill Lane site."

South East Water said there were "interruptions" in the St Margarets Road area of the town.

Customers were facing having no water, or low water pressure, the utility company said.

A South East Water spokesperson said: "This has been caused by a burst main which we are trying to fix as quickly as we can.

"To allow for the safe repair of the burst pipe a road closure has been put in place."

Blackwell Hollow was closed between its junctions with Cranston Road and Sandy Lane.

South East Water's regional network manager Charles Healey said he was unable to confirm how long the repairs would take.

A company spokesperson said: "We have managed to re-route some of the water in our network which means most customers should have their supplies returned."

Mr Walker said: "We will communicate as soon as we can if there are any further closures."
