A hotel has been told it can build new underground spa facilities.

The Varsity Hotel and Spa in Cambridge city centre, applied to excavate two new basement floor levels under its building for the project.

Proposed floor plans submitted to Cambridge City Council showed a sauna, steam room and a swimming pool could be built at the site on Thompsons Lane, off Bridge Street.

The local authority granted planning permission at a meeting last week.

Hydrotherapy and plunge pools were also included in the plans, as was a relaxation area for guests.

"[It] provides a positive, sustainable, long-term use for the hotel and avoids the need for facilities off site, thereby reducing impact on the environment," the application, external read.

Approving the project, the council said the new offering would "enhance the hotel facilities".
