Drivers have been urged to plan ahead amid a series of closures on a key route.

The A36 between Upton Lovell and the Heytesbury roundabout will shut from 20:00 GMT on Friday until 06:00 on Monday. There will also be a mixture of overnight and full weekends closures along the route.

National Highways leaders confirmed that work started earlier this month, with essential resurfacing overnight along the 3-mile (4.8 km) section.

Tracey Matthews, National Highways project manager, said: "We fully appreciate that road closures can be frustrating, but we're unable to carry out the work while the road is open to traffic."

National Highways officials said the improved road surface will ensure safer, more reliable journeys for the thousands of drivers who travel on the route daily.

The road will also be closed on the weekends of 21-24 November and 28 November-1 December, with signed diversion routes in place via the A303 and A350.

Work on this section is scheduled to be completed on 12 December, and in the new year, a resurfacing programme will take place on weeknights only at the A36/A303 Deptford interchange.
