Wolverhampton Central Library will remain open as work begins to restore its roof and exterior, as part of multi-million pound plans for a new learning quarter in the city.

The £61m scheme will also see internal remodelling, new rear entrance lobby and landscaping of the Grade II listed building later in the year.

Adult Education Wolverhampton’s Alan Garner Centre on Old Hall Street will also be remodelled with the construction of a two-storey building to connect it to the library’s 1930s extension.

Both sites will continue to operate throughout the duration of the works, which are expected to be completed in autumn 2025.

The improved library and adult education facilities will sit alongside a new state-of- the-art facility for City of Wolverhampton College, which is currently being constructed on the site of the college’s former Metro One campus.

The council has said it wants "to deliver a vibrant education hub" to boost learning, apprenticeships and employment options while retaining talent, rather than losing people to different parts of the region.

Work is already under way on a new £8.1m Advanced Technology and Automotive Centre at City of Wolverhampton College’s Wellington Road campus in Bilston, which is on track to be completed this summer.
