A wave of new murals in a seaside town aim to celebrate local heritage and brighten up the town.

The public artworks in Morecambe will complement those revealed in February, many of which were painted by local artist Matty Green, the town's BID said.

The first artist to begin work in this second wave, starting later this month, will be Abigail Hampsey, who describes herself as "a working-class painter", and who has exhibited her work all over the UK including in The Saatchi Gallery in London.

The location of her mural will be kept secret until it is completed, but all the artworks will be within the main Promenade area, eventually leading to an art trail in the town.

Over the coming weeks, other artists will start to transform walls and spaces around Morecambe, with exact locations and designs to be revealed later.

John O'Neill, Morecambe BID manager, said: "Public art projects like these do more than brighten our streets – they tell our story, inspire pride, and give people another reason to visit and enjoy our town.

"We're proud to support local artists."
