A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the death of a 70-year-old woman in Devon, police have said.

Police and paramedics were called at about 13:15 GMT to Lark Rise in Newton Poppleford, near Exeter, where the woman was pronounced dead, officers said.

A 67-year-old man from the Newton Poppleford area was arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody, Devon and Cornwall Police said.

Det Insp Paula Trevett said the man and the woman were believed to be known to each other.

"I would like to reassure the community that this is being treated as an isolated incident and at this time we are not seeking anyone else in connection to the death," she said.

She said the public should expect to see "an increased police presence in the area".

Officers said they were still trying to locate the woman's next of kin.

Anyone with information was asked to contact police.
