Met Office issues yellow weather warning for rain

As much as 80mm (3.1in) of rain could fall in places, the Met Office said

A yellow weather warning for heavy rain with a risk of localised flooding has been issued by the Met Office.

The warning is in place for Essex, Northamptonshire, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. It comes into force between 08:00 GMT on Sunday until 06:00 on Monday.

The Met Office said it expected up to 20mm (0.7in) of rain to fall, but there could be up to 50mm (1.9in) over high ground and as much as 80mm (3.1in) in a few places.

People have been warned the extra rainfall on top of recent downpours could lead to some surface water and river flooding.

The Met Office warning for rain affects Essex, Northamptonshire, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough

The Met Office said there could be power cuts and a small chance some homes and businesses could be flooded.

It also issued a yellow warning for high winds with gusts of up to 60mph (96kmh) for Buckinghamshire and Essex, with up to 70mph (112kmh) for coastal Essex.

That will begin on Sunday morning and spread to southern and western areas through the day.

Earlier, the Met Office issued a rare red warning for Northern Ireland and parts of Scotland on Friday, as dangerous Storm Éowyn heads towards the UK from 07:00 on Friday.

The entire rest of the country is under at least one yellow warning as Éowyn brings strong winds, rain and snow.
