Tenants are set to move into new homes as part of a council's biggest new-build project in decades.

The 21 properties, just off Neasham Road in Darlington, are the first phase of a total of 150 homes, designed and built by an in-house team.

The council said the new builds were a key part of the recently-agreed council plan, aimed at reducing the number of people on the housing waiting list.

Work on later phases will continue into 2025.

Once complete, the Neasham Road scheme will include 64 two-bedroom apartments, 24 two-bedroom houses, 43 three-bedroom houses and 19 four-bedroom houses.

Some properties in later phases will also be offered as rent-to-buy, which the council said would provide a first step to affordable home ownership.

Residents and the new tenants will also be invited to take part in a consultation on a new play area that is to be included in the development, with work set to start in spring 2025 for completion by the summer holidays.
