Police have launched an appeal for information after a moorhen was seriously injured by a slingshot in Newark.

Nottinghamshire Police said it happened at Balderton Lake at about 18:45 BST on 4 September.

The moorhen was euthanised due to the severity of its injuries, leaving "several babies" behind, the force added.

Balderton Parish Council, which owns the lake, is said to be "deeply saddened and concerned" by the wildlife crime.

Councillor Jane Buxton, chair of the parish council, said: "Our council has sought advice from Nottinghamshire Police and we hope to implement some of their suggestions now the breeding season has concluded."

The council has also been working with schools and community groups, she added, and had enhanced security improvements around the lake.

Anyone with any information or CCTV footage is urged to contact the force.
