Plans to convert a former college building in Melton Mowbray into flats have been given the go-ahead.

Melton Borough Council has approved a planning application from developer Fortress Eight to convert the building in King Street into 26 apartments.

According to planning documents, the building has attracted vandals with some windows smashed, and metal stolen from pipes within the property.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) said the 1930s building was used by Brooksby Melton College for performing arts teaching until 2016.

According to planning documents, there will be 19 one-bedroom flats, five two-beds and two three-beds in the proposed development.

Documents added the former college building would be refurbished with 11 flats each on the ground floor and first floor, and a new building consisting of four apartments would also be built on the site.

Fortress Eight has said it wants to "preserve the aesthetics of the existing façade", but would replace the "missing and decayed" windows.
