Bomb disposal experts have been called in after a suspected ordnance was discovered on a beach by someone using a metal detector.

The beach at West Bay in Westgate-on-Sea in Thanet, Kent, was evacuated and closed after the discovery on Saturday.

Police and HM Coastguard teams were also called to the scene.

The coastguard said the object had been covered by the incoming tide, making it "unrecoverable", with experts planning to return on Sunday to assess it.

The beach would remain closed until then, it added.
