Call for laptop donations as Christmas nears
- Published
Wiltshire residents are being asked to sponsor a laptop this Christmas to provide digital access to those who need it.
Wiltshire Digital Drive (WDD) hopes to tackle digital poverty with its The Gift of Tech Appeal, which will provide laptops to those in need.
Having access to a laptop enables people to apply for jobs, attend school, and better manage their finances and social lives, WDD says.
More than 3,400 devices have been distributed by WDD for free to adults, children and young people since August 2020.
One laptop recipient was referred to WDD, which is a community interest company, through the Wiltshire Centre for Independent Living.
They were given a laptop after struggling to find employment as a university graduate, which led to financial issues.
"Being registered as partially sighted at the age of 23 was not what I thought was on the cards for me as I was living a full and fun life and had big plans for my future," they said.
'Transform someone's future'
Within a month of receiving a laptop, they said they had found a job and were able to keep in touch with family and friends "so much easier than before".
Natalie Luckham, chief executive of WDD, said receiving a laptop could "transform someone's future".
"By sponsoring a laptop this Christmas, supporters will be opening doors and creating opportunities for someone less fortunate than themselves," she said.
"I appreciate how tough things are for everyone right now, but without support I worry that we won’t be able to continue our work in the future."
The Gift of Tech appeal aims to raise £25,000, with the money going towards the refurbishment and redistribution of 550 laptops in 2025 across the region.
