A track cyclist from Lincolnshire said it had not sunk in that he would soon be representing Team GB at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Ed Lowe, 20, from Stamford, only joined the Olympic podium programme team in October 2023.

He has been selected for the Men’s Sprint Team, riding the opening lap as Man 1.

“If you’d have told me a year ago that I’d be going to my first Olympic Games, I wouldn’t have believed you”, he said.

“This is everything I’ve worked and trained for since I was a little kid.

“It’s a bit weird. It’s hard to process and I don’t think I will process it until I’m there and I’ve done it.”

Lowe started cycling locally and joined Fenland Clarion and Bourne Wheelers.

At the age of 12, he started competing seriously in road endurance races, but it was only when he was 14 that he found the velodrome and took to track sprinting "like a duck to water".

He was quickly talent spotted, and over the past six years progressed through all rungs of the GB cycling team talent development programme.

His dad, David Lowe, said his selection was unexpected.

He said: “We thought maybe there was a chance that he could go to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, so it was a big surprise for us that he can go four years earlier.”

Appearing at his first Olympics is one thing for Lowe, but if he was to medal, it would be a "dream come true".

“To end up on that Olympic podium would mean everything to me”, he said. “I’d do anything to get there.”
