Part of a seaside road in the south of the Isle of Man has been closed for 18 months to allow for redevelopment of a former marine laboratory.

Breakwater Road in Port Erin has been shut to traffic until 20 May 2025 while a new complex is built on the site.

Delgatie Limited plans to redevelop the site into apartments, a hotel and shops.

Demolition of the marine laboratory buildings began last year.

The former marine station was first established in 1892 and welcomed thousands of marine biology students until its closure in 2006.

Developers Delgatie bought the land from the Isle of Man government for £500,000 in 2018 and were granted planning permission for a multimillion pound complex on the site last year.

A further road closure order for a stretch of Breakwater Road leading on from the site is also planned to accommodate the Isle of Man Young Farmers charity tractor procession.

That temporary closure will be put in place on 8 December, between 16:30 and 18:45 GMT.
