Flooding in the roof of the Grand Opera House in York forced the cancellation

  • Published

A stage show production of the Wizard of Oz was cancelled on its final night after a "substantial" leak in the theatre roof.

The show at York's Grand Opera House was cancelled minutes before curtain up when director Nik Briggs came on stage to announce it would not go ahead due to a leak caused by heavy rain.

ATG, which runs the Grand Opera House York, said it would refund all tickets from Monday.

A spokesperson said an investigation was ongoing but all scheduled shows at present were going ahead.

The production, by York Stage, was on the final night of its nine-day run when the show was halted.

The spokesperson added the decision was taken as "a precautionary measure" and that its priority was "customer safety and wellbeing".

A York Stage spokesperson said: "While it's not the ending we had hoped for, this magical production has been filled with joy, wonder and unforgettable moments shared with our incredible audiences.

"We couldn't be prouder of the magic we created together."
