The new design has been unveiled for the replacement of Peterhead Academy.

The multi-million-pounds community campus has been several years in the planning in the Aberdeenshire town.

It was originally hoped it could be open to students by mid-2026, but that was later pushed back to 2028 at the earliest.

Renewed planning papers state the proposed Kinmundy Road facility would be a "recognisable new focal point for Peterhead".

The aim is for the building to be constructed to use less energy and have solar panels to help with its electricity use.

The ground floor is expected to feature drama and music studios, a sports hall, dining area and gymnasium.

A dance studio has been proposed on the first floor, alongside a design skills studio, library and "learning plaza" study area.

The second floor would house science labs and more classrooms for subjects including business and computing, and maths.

Previous plan scrapped

Outside there would be a grass pitch for football and rugby, an all-weather pitch, a synthetic running track and a grass field for various sports.

Proposals to replace two primary schools and a special education school in Peterhead were earlier scrapped, with plans for the new secondary going ahead.

Councillors voting on the scheme said the replacement facilities for Dales Park, Meethill and Anna Ritchie schools would not go ahead as they were no longer affordable.

The Peterhead Community Campus Project - which would have replaced all four schools - has faced delays after the preferred contractor to build it pulled out last year.
