Structural damage closes Metro station platform

Loose coping stones have been found at Benton Metro station

A Metro station platform is expected to be closed until at least the middle of the week due to structural damage with one of its buildings.

Platform One at Benton station has been shut since Sunday morning after loose coping stones were discovered.

Operator Nexus said the platform was closed "in the interest of public safety" and advised passengers to alter their journey if travelling there.

Platform Two remains open for trains heading to North Tyneside and St James.

Nexus said scaffolding would need to be put up at the Newcastle station so repairs can take place.

A spokesperson said: "A detailed structural assessment is being carried out and we aim to get this issue repaired as soon as possible this week."

Passengers planning to get off at Benton from the Coast towards South Gosforth are being advised to alight at Four Lane Ends. They then need to change platforms and get a Metro back to Benton and use Platform Two.

Those wishing to board at Benton for trains to Newcastle via Four Lane Ends need to cross over the footbridge and travel to Palmersville. They then need to change to Platform Two and head back towards Newcastle city centre.
