Man in court charged with rape and fraud

A man has appeared in court charged with raping a woman and defrauding an elderly man out of thousands of pounds.

Steven Phillips, 43, has been charged with two counts of rape, controlling and coercive and two further sexual offences.

West Yorkshire Police said the fraud charge related to claims he obtained £16,500 from an elderly male. All offences are said to have been carried out in the Wakefield area.

Mr Phillips, of no fixed address, appeared at Leeds Magistrates' Court on Thursday where he was remanded to the city's crown court for a hearing on 31 October.
