Villagers object to 'nuisance' nearby car meets
- Published
Residents of a village said nearby car meets were a "nuisance" and they feared someone could be "killed" by anti-social driving.
Cambridgeshire Police said it had received reports about anti-social driving and car meets happening at the Elean Business Park in Sutton, Cambridgeshire, with drivers coming from Peterborough, the Fenland and Buckinghamshire.
Mubeen, 56, who has lived in Sutton for nearly three years, said the area could be "like a race track" and he was often kept awake at night by the noise.
The force said it had sent out 21 warning letters to registered drivers who had been causing issues in the area.
Kevin Woolridge, 62, said: "They have been doing it for years. The trouble is police won't do anything. It is a matter of time before someone is killed."
Mubeen described the village as a "quiet and a community-based" area.
"I live a few hundred yards away from the business park," he explained.
"It can be like a race track and we do get races going through the village.
"It is usually past 22:00 at night... mainly Friday night onwards.
"It is a nuisance. The noise is unbelievable. Wakes you up in the night. Quite often you can hear a crash happen as well. It is not just cars but also motorbikes as well."
Alice Parr, 69 a resident of Sutton for 17 years, called the cars "loud" and said she was "shocked" to hear drivers were travelling so far to take part in the meets.
Ms Parr said: "You can certainly hear the cars revving around. It is loud.
"I am shocked drivers coming from afar. I suppose they are told on social media about where to meet.
"I am very concerned about road safety. I am all in favour for the 20mph introduced in parts of Cambridgeshire... I think it will keep heavy traffic on the main roads."
Cambridgeshire Police said if anyone was caught driving in an anti-social manner in the area they would be prosecuted or receive a Section 59 warning. If a driver or a car was seen more than once, the vehicle would be seized.
A spokesperson said: "If people keep returning they could get a CPW (community protection warning) and then a CPN (community protection notice)."
The force has asked anyone with concerns of erratically driven cars to report them.
