A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a person suffered multiple stab wounds inside a Lidl supermarket, police have said.

Officers were called to the Brook Park West Retail Park in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, at 11:05 BST.

Police and the ambulance service found a man who had suffered serious stab injuries to his leg. He was in hospital in a stable condition.

A second man was detained and taken to hospital in a serious condition with injuries Essex Police believed were "self-inflicted".

A knife was recovered from the scene.

Essex Police said there was no continuing threat to the public.

The store was evacuated and closed while officers dealt with the incident.

Det Ch Insp Jason Scrivener praised the "swift actions of staff at the store" which meant there was "no further risk to the public at this time".

"We are continuing to maintain a presence at the store and it will remain closed to the public while we carry out our inquiries," he added.

The force asked the public to avoid the area, but to get in touch with any information.
