A dog with stab wounds has been rescued by the RSPCA after being found chained to a lamp-post.

The charity said the animal, named Comet by its rescuers, was discovered in Bilston, Wolverhampton.

He was taken to the RSPCA's Birmingham Animal Hospital for urgent veterinary treatment for three possible wounds.

Animal Rescue Officer Bal Dhamia said: "It's heartbreaking to see a dog abandoned with painful injuries in this way."

She said Comet was "very subdued and looked exhausted" when she arrived and was reluctant to eat or get up.

The RSPCA added that they received reports of slim white man tying the dog to the lamp post at about 20:00 GMT on 9 December and was hoping to trace him.
