A planning application has been submitted to build a new speedway stadium.

Swindon Motorsports Ltd wants to build the Studley Grange Motorsports Hub on a former waste site on the edge of Swindon and Royal Wootton Bassett, near to junction 16 of the M4.

The application includes a 330m speedway arena, a karting circuit for recreational and competition use and refreshment facilities.

Terry Russell, chairman of Swindon Motorsports and Swindon Speedway, said the submission comes "after many years of tireless effort and determination" and urged speedway fans to "back" the application.

"Our proposals represent the best, and only, chance of securing a return of speedway in Swindon," he said.

"Realistically, this is our last chance to provide the sport with a sustainable future in this region," he added.

Speedway at the town's Abbey Stadium stopped in 2020, with the Swindon Robins, unable to compete ever since.

If approved, those behind the venture said the site will serve as the team's new home and will include meeting spaces, business units, covered terraces and an observation area.

It will also include more than 200 permanent parking spaces, with overflow capacity for more 500 vehicles at large events, alongside coach parking and drop-off point, they said.

Swindon Motorsports also said the overall development could also create up to 56 full-time jobs.

A decision on the planning application is expected by the end of the year and if approved, construction will begin in early 2026.
