A Norwich councillor said he had resigned from his role to focus on his duties as an MP in Suffolk.

Peter Prinsley, the Labour member for Bury St Edmunds and Stowmarket, announced he would be stepping down from his position on Norwich City Council.

He is following in the footsteps of Labour colleague Terry Jermy, MP for South West Norfolk, who revealed he had left his posts at two councils.

A spokesman for Prinsley told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: "He is grateful for the opportunity to have represented such a vibrant community."

Prinsley was elected to Norwich City Council in 2023, representing Bowthorpe ward.

A spokesperson said that the MP, who is also an ear, nose and throat surgeon, remained committed to "serving the public".

There will be a by-election held in Norwich to find a new councillor for the ward.

Jermy revealed he had left his posts at Breckland District Council - where he served for 14 years - and Norfolk County Council where he had held his seat for 12 years.

He was originally planning to stay on the county council until the elections in May - but these have now been pushed back a year due to the major plans for local government reorganisation.
