Five people, including a six-year-old girl, were seriously injured after a crash involving four vehicles on the M6, Lancashire Police have said.
It happened at about 10:30 BST on Monday on the southbound section of the motorway between junctions 33 and 32 at Forton Services near Lancaster.
Nine people in total were hurt, including a one-year-old boy, with eight remaining in hospital though none are thought to have life-threatening injuries police said.
The crash happened when a BMW 4 Series collided with a Honda CR-V, which caused both cars to hit the central reservation before they struck two other vehicles.
The driver and front seat passenger of the BMW, a man and woman both in their 30s, and a six-year-old girl who was a rear seat passenger suffered serious injuries.
A one-year-old boy who was also a passenger in the back of the care was hurt but to a lesser extent, Lancashire Police said.
The driver and front seat passenger from the Honda CR-V, a man and woman in their 80s, suffered relatively minor injuries, the force said.
The two other cars struck in the pile-up included a Nissan X-Trial, whose driver, a woman in her 30s, suffered minor injuries.
The other was a Honda HR-V, where the driver and front seat passenger of the Honda HR-V, a man and woman in their 60s, also suffered serious injuries.
Following the crash the motorway was shut for a number of hours, which caused major disruption and delays to the surrounding road network.
Sgt Anthony Beckett said: "I would appeal to anyone who saw the collision itself, or the BMW driving prior to the collision, or who has any dashcam footage, to get in touch."
