The operators behind the popular Leeds Christmas market are set to bring a similar event to Barnsley.

Market Place, which also runs Christmas markets in Belfast and Plymouth, will oversee the event in Glass Works Square in the town centre from 29 November to 21 December.

Barnsley Council said a "range of safety measures" would be in place to manage crowds, including plans for a park and ride should it be needed.

Councillor Robin Franklin said: "We know how much visitors to the town centre have loved the Christmas market since its launch in 2023, and we're building on that momentum to deliver something truly special this time around."

The council said the market would feature "an exciting mix of talent traders", who would set up shop in up to 30 decorated wooden chalets.

Local makers, artists, and craftspeople are encouraged to apply as soon as possible for one of the limited chalet spaces, which are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, it added.

'One to remember'

Franklin, who is the council's cabinet spokesperson for regeneration and culture, said: "We're thrilled to be bringing the Christmas market back to Barnsley town centre this December – bigger and better than ever.

"We can't wait to welcome everyone to The Glass Works this festive season and make this year's Christmas market one to remember."

Andy Pidgen, operations director at Market Place, said the firm was "absolutely delighted" to be coming to Barnsley.

"Christmas markets have a proven track record of breathing life into towns during the festive season – boosting footfall, supporting retail and hospitality, and creating unforgettable experiences," he said.

"We can't wait to see the community and visitors enjoy everything the market has to offer."
