A £51m project to improve the roads around a hospital has been completed more than two years after work began.

A 2.6km (1.6 mile) spine road and seven roundabouts have been created as part of the North West Crewe Package scheme in the Leighton area of Crewe, Cheshire.

The work, which began in May 2022, also included the realignment of Smithy Lane and Flowers Lane, alongside improvements to junctions on the A530 Middlewich Road and Minshull New Road.

As well as improving traffic around Leighton Hospital, it is hoped the new infrastructure will open up development opportunities in the area.

During the opening of the main spine road, called Tottys Hall Way, on Wednesday, Cheshire East councillor Mark Goldsmith said it had been a “great project on many levels”.

He added that it would improve access to the hospital, create new opportunities for businesses, open up land for housing and create a safer environment for children at nearby Leighton Academy.

Samantha Thompson and Joanne Leigh from the school attended the opening along with four pupils, and buried a time capsule at the site.

Kay Slade, area director at contractor Balfour Beatty, which carried out the work, said: “We are delighted to have successfully completed this significant infrastructure scheme for Cheshire East Council, which will significantly enhance connectivity and accessibility in Crewe.”
