A cannabis farm growing across three rooms could have caused a fire after the electricity supply was tampered with, police have said.

It was discovered at a property in Middlesbrough on Monday, where officers seized 116 plants.

Cleveland Police said the drugs could have gone on to have a street value of almost £100,000.

A 23-year-old man found inside the property was arrested on suspicion of cultivating cannabis and abstracting electricity.

A police spokesman said because the electricity supply had been tampered with, it had created a "potentially dangerous situation".

"This is now being made safe by colleagues from the electricity board," a spokesperson added.

The man is currently in custody.
