A man had to be cut free from his car after crashing into a 16th Century pub in a Lincolnshire town.

Two vehicles were believed to have been involved in the incident in Church Gate, Spalding, which happened at about 09:50 GMT, police said.

Lincolnshire Police said one of the cars had “gone through the wall” of Ye Olde White Horse pub.

Firefighters used cutting equipment to release the driver, who had suffered minor injuries, from his vehicle, officers added.

Andrew Law, who runs the Crystal Inn Chinese restaurant next to the pub, said: “You could feel the impact even next door.”

Speaking of the damage to the pub, which was believed to have been closed since 2019, he added: “It’s not great, it’s an old building as well.”

Building Control officers from South Holland District Council have been assessing the damage to the building, which was believed to be one of the oldest in the town.

Councillor Robert Gibson, from South Holland District Council, said the pub was owned by Samuel Smiths Brewery.

He said: “I don’t think the building is listed, but it’s an old pub with a nice thatched roof. It won’t be a cheap thing to repair.

“I hope everybody in the accident is OK and I hope Sam Smiths can get it let out and get the business thriving again at some point soon.”

The BBC has approached Samuel Smiths Brewery for comment.
