A community special school in Bolton has been forced to close following a break-in on site.

Rumworth School, in Ladybridge, announced that it was closed to "ensure safety" and "preserve evidence" after a break-in.

Police have confirmed they are investigating a suspected burglary at the school after they were called to reports of a break-in at 07:30 GMT.

The school's headteacher Miss Dunne confirmed the incident via social media - adding that the school would be open again on Tuesday.

"Thank you for your continued support and understanding on Monday 1 December," she said.

"Unfortunately, we had a break-in during the early hours of Monday morning.

"After liaising with the police, we had to close the school site due to preserving any evidence and ensuring the safety of the site.

"The school will be open on Tuesday 2nd December as normal.

"We will be completing the Santa Dash that was planned for Monday so please do wear your festive jumpers."
