A woman was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after a car hit a barrier on the M2 in Kent.

Kent Police said they were called at 16:41 GMT on Sunday to a report that a car had hit a barrier on the eastbound carriageway between junction five, near Sittingbourne, and six, near Faversham.

A man was also treated at the scene and taken to a local hospital to be checked.

The eastbound carriageway was closed until about 20:45 when one lane reopened, the other remained closed for barrier repairs and removal of an oil spillage, police said.

Traffic was also stopped on the westbound carriageway to allow an air ambulance to land at the scene.

The police confirmed that patrols, paramedics and fire crews attended the incident.

Anthony Nwabudike told the BBC he had been stuck in the traffic for two hours.

He said it was "very cold" and "difficult to sit here waiting endlessly".
