Ice warning issued for parts of the South East

An overnight ice warning has been issued for Kent and parts of Sussex.

The Met Office yellow warning comes into effect at 18:00 GMT on Thursday and lasts until 11:00 on Friday.

It said there will be patches of ice on untreated roads, with pavements also dangerous for pedestrians.

Kent County Council (KCC) has also issued a warning that some roads will be icy.

KCC said road users should "drive cautiously and be deliberate and slower in actions, and not be surprised by other vehicles braking".

The authority said its gritters would be out on main roads overnight on Thursday.

It also offered advice on staying warm, external, including heating one room well during the day and bedrooms just before bedtime, and drawing curtains to keep heat inside.

Amber and yellow warnings for ice and snow are in place across the rest of the country, and on Wednesday the first snow of the autumn fell in Surrey, Sussex and Kent.

The NHS advises that some groups such as the over-65s, under-fives and people with long-term health conditions need to ensure they stay warm during cold spells.

It has issued advice on keeping warm, external, including reducing draughts and wearing several layers of thinner clothing rather than one thicker layer.

The AA, external, the RAC, external and Green Flag, external all offer tips on driving in wintry conditions, including allowing extra journey time, staying on major roads where possible and making sure vehicles have enough fuel for unexpected delays.
