An electrical fault in a fridge caused a blaze in a pizza takeaway restaurant, a fire service has confirmed.

The Essex fire service said it was called to the kitchen at the business in Peartree Road, in Stanway near Colchester, at about 09:09 BST.

Firefighters worked to stop it spreading to neighbouring units, contained it and the service confirmed no-one was injured.

Station manager Nick Singleton said: "This incident highlights the need for businesses to regularly review fire risk assessments they have in place."

He said staff had a good understanding of the assessment and emergency plan and "were able to act quickly to evacuate the building safely".

"An investigation carried out to determine the cause of the fire found it was caused by an electrical fault in a fridge," a fire spokesperson added.
