A lorry driver fled after becoming stuck under a railway bridge which forced train services to be stopped.

Leicestershire Police and Network Rail were called to reports a lorry had struck Fosters Bridge between Ketton and South Luffenham, Rutland, on Monday morning.

But by the time they arrived the vehicle had left the scene, police said.

A spokesperson for Network Rail said it received a call at about 08:10 GMT reporting a lorry had become "trapped under the bridge" and trains were held while the structure was assessed.

The spokesperson added: "There was no immediate damage found to the bridge.

"There was a backlog of train services but by 09:25, everything was back to normal."

Leicestershire Police said in a post on Facebook: "The cost of lines being stopped is immense, and the delay can be felt up and down the country. One bridge can seriously affect national infrastructure."

The force said inquiries would be carried out.
