A man extradited from the United States has appeared at Londonderry Magistrates' Court on charges, including robbing a fast food outlet and assaulting police.

Stewart McAllister, 29, of no fixed abode, is also charged with having an offensive weapon, possessing cocaine with intent to supply and driving offences.

They are said to have happened on 4 September 2016.

A further charge of assaulting a police officer relates to an incident on 6 September of the same year.

A police witness told the court he could connect the accused to the charges.

A defence solicitor said Mr McAllister had been in custody in the US since April, adding that he has “no income whatsoever and will be going into custody”.

He said there had been two other co-accused in the case who had been dealt with by the courts years ago.

The case against the defendant, the solicitor added, would be disposed of in the Crown Court and a preliminary enquiry would need to take place.

The defendant was remanded into custody to appear again on 29 August.
