A new road sign in Surrey has been gaining attention because of a misspelt town name.

The sign in Portsmouth Road, Milford, directs motorists to "Goldalming" instead of Godalming.

Residents started noticing the error on Wednesday, sparking a flurry of comments on social media.

Surrey County Council said its contractor confirmed this was a mistake made by the sign manufacturer and it was in the process of being rectified at no additional cost.

Milford councillor Maxine Gale said she had reported the sign.

"I have said it might be an idea to take it down sooner rather than later to save SCC any further red faces."
