Modular swimming pools could replace a regional pool shut amid concerns over reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (Raac).

Peterborough City Council has agreed to spend £2.5m demolishing the pool in Bishop's Road after it was closed last year.

Council leader Mohammed Farooq, of the Peterborough First group, said a new pool estimated to cost £30m was on the cards and could be completed by 2028.

In the meantime, modular pools which require no excavating and can be assembled on site are being considered as an alternative.

MP Paul Bristow said it was heart-breaking for the Peterborough community to lose its regional pool

Peterborough's Conservative MP Paul Bristow said he was “devastated” to learn the old pool would have to be demolished.

“The idea that it will cost £26m to repair the pool…I don’t believe it," Mr Bristow said.

“In the past, I have managed to get millions of pounds for the city and I promise to deliver a new pool in the next five years for Peterborough.

“The council is promising a new pool but they need the money for it, and I have delivered the money for the projects so far.”

Built in the 1970s, the pool was closed last September after concerns were raised over structural cracking, out-of-date mechanical and electrical installations and damaged asbestos.

Mr Farooq said demolition work might take "a few months" to get under way.

Work on a new pool is not expected to begin until 2026.

Mr Farooq, who represents Hampton and Hargate ward in Peterborough, said work was ongoing to build a new hydrotherapy pool in Peterborough. The current St George's Hydrotherapy Pool has been shut for four years.

The planned new pool would include a teaching pool, splash pool, cafe, sports hall, gym, clip and climb facility and soft play area.

“The pool lasted over 10 years after its sell-by-date," he said. "It has not been improved over the years and we need a new modern facility.”
