Motorists have been warned to expect temporary speed limits on the lower sections of the Isle of Man TT course for the next eight weeks.

The restrictions, which will be applied to out of town areas on the course excluding the mountain section itself, will allow for maintenance ahead of the races.

Works include road and pavement repairs and the installation of race and marshal equipment.

Stretches of the roads will be restricted to 40mph (64km/h) on a 24 hour basis as they become needed.

The Department of Infrastructure said the measures would allow the works to be carried out safely, and speed limits would be dropped further to 20mph (32km/h) through the work sites.

The roads where work will take place include the A1 between Douglas and Ballacraine, the A3 between Ballacraine and Ramsey and the A18 between the Creg ny Baa and Douglas.

The works being carried out also include drainage maintenance, re-marking road lining, hedge and verge maintenance, pavement refurbishment, and the installation of the electronic red flag system.

A spokesman for the department said: “Planning is ongoing to ensure that works are coordinated and that speed limits in a particular area are only imposed when work is to start and are lifted as soon as possible once work is complete.

“Work is likely to be ongoing on more than one section at a time over the full length of the lower section of the course.”

Temporary restrictions are expected to be in place for the works until 10 May.

The Isle of Man TT races run from 27 May to 8 June.
