Teesside-born singer-songwriter James Arthur has chosen which local band will support him during a forthcoming show on his home turf.

Four acts were battling it out to open the star's gig at Middlesbrough's Riverside Stadium on Saturday.

Following Friday's Road to Riverside event at Teesside University's student's union, Spilt Milk were named as the winners.

The up-and-coming indie band said they were delighted and could not wait to take to the stage in front of thousands.

The group are from Gateshead and three of the four members are triplets.

One of them, Isaac Nolan, said his "legs felt weak" when it was announced they were winners.

Theo Nolan added: "I hugged so many people in the space of a minute I felt I was going to have a heart attack."

James Arthur grew up playing in local bands, and said he was keen to "give back" and have one support him.

The X Factor winner is currently mid-way through a global tour.
