Five men have been arrested over disorder during a protest at hotel housing asylum seekers in Aldershot.

Police said "a minority of the 200 people" at the protest outside the Potters International Hotel were involved in disruption on Wednesday evening.

Hampshire Constabulary said five men had been arrested on suspicion of affray and using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour to stir up racial hatred.

A 32-year-old man from Farnborough, a 25-year-old man and an 18-year-old man, both from Aldershot, and two men from Farnham aged 28 and 60 have been bailed.

Police are appealing for help identifying two men seen at the protest

The protest in Aldershot followed similar gatherings across England - some of them violent - after the killing of three young girls in Southport last Monday.

The demonstration descended into a "mob-type" protest, according to Hampshire police and crime commissioner (PCC) Donna Jones.

One police officer suffered a minor injury during the disturbance.

Police are continuing to appeal for help identifying two men pictured at the protest.

They are also appealing for information, dashcam, CCTV and mobile images that could help the investigation.

Assistant Chief Constable Paul Bartolomeo said: "Our specialist teams are working hard to identify anyone who has committed a criminal offence and we will take swift and robust action against those people."
