The chairman of Guernsey's financial regulator retired despite a proposal to give him another three years in the job.

The Guernsey Financial Services Commission (GFSC) said Julian Winser decided to retire in May from the role he has held since December 2021.

The decision came shortly after the States of Guernsey's Policy and Resources Committee (P&R) proposed keeping Mr Winser in the role for another three years until 2027.

P&R has submitted an alternative proposal, external - which will be voted on during the States meeting on 17 July - to replace Mr Winser with GFSC vice-chair John Aspden.

The original proposal, external from P&R sought to have Mr Winser continue in his role in order to "ensure continuity of experience".

In its proposal for Mr Aspden's potential appointment, P&R said he was a financial professional with vast experience.

The proposal said: "Based on his significant professional experience and time as vice-chairman, the Policy and Resources Committee is pleased to nominate Mr Aspden for appointment as the GFSC chairman."

If ratified, the proposal would see Mr Aspden act as chair of the commission until 2 April, 2026.
